Three Elegies for Jimmy Schuyler

Pearl

Jimmy was always so kind. When I was
a kid, he bought me two Janis Joplin albums,
I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again, Mama and
Pearl, and another time he gave me the
classic Kinks album Arthur. On that album,
the Kinks reached a textural height
with songs like “Brainwashed” and “Young
And Innocent Days.” Jimmy was right
with it. As he wrote, “Look at your hand —
it’s real.” He wrote me a letter which
said, “Bruno says to tell Sunny — but
I can’t make out the rest.” The two dogs
never did meet, and he would send me a
dollar for Christmas. Now, at 2 a.m., it rains.
The kind of rain Jimmy would have noticed.
